Birth Doula

What is my role as a doula?

As a birth doula, I encourage an atmosphere of support and education that empowers laboring women to be proactive in decisions pertaining to birth that helps to promote a safer and more satisfying birth experience. I have successfully completed a DONA International approved training.  I will use my professional training, education, and research to provide assistance to you and your birth partner.  With the approval of your healthcare provider to ensure the safety of you and your baby, I can suggest comfort methods, relaxation techniques, and positions of labor.  I am a self-employed individual who is working for you independently.

As a doula, I do not:

1. Perform medical procedures or clinical tasks, such as blood pressure, fetal heart checks, vaginal exams, etc. My job is to provide only physical comfort and emotional support.

2. Make decisions for you. I will obtain information that will assist you in making an informed decision. If decisions are differing from ones on the Birth Plan, I will bring those to your attention.

3. Communicate any health care decisions to medical professionals or hospital staff on your behalf. I will talk to you about possible benefits, risks, and alternatives of decisions but you or your partner will speak directly to the clinical staff about the decision of your choice.
